FAQ
-
Who is this Workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at intermediate and experienced photographers looking to add to their knowledge and skills in regards to street photography. It is taught in English so a firm understanding of English is a requisite.
-
I am traveling with someone. May they come with me?
Travel companions are of course invited to the group meal for an additional charge. Class and after hours time is reserved for participants only.
-
How many people will attend the workshop?
A maximum of 8. I want to make sure everyone gets enough one on one time. I don’t want the workshop feeling like a college survey class but more like friends getting together to do and talk about what they love.
-
What type of camera do I need to have?
While I am a Leica user and a huge fan of rangefinder cameras, your camera should be what you prefer to use for street photography.
-
What else should I be aware of?
This is a street photography course in the most beautiful city in the world. You will be walking A LOT so comfortable footwear is VERY important. The weather in May is usually good but as it is uncontrollable, be prepared for the chance of rain, heat or even a cold spell. Look up the weather forecasts closer to your arrival in Paris and allow for the unexpected. The workshop is rain or shine so be ready. In the event of particularly inclement weather, there will be suggestions for additional indoor and more protected locations.
-
Does the fee include accommodations?
No. The fee includes the course and social activities only. Travel to and from the workshop, lodging, transportation around Paris and meals (outside of organized activities) are the responsibility of each participant. Where you choose to stay is up to you but it’s recommended to stay fairly close to the workshop location so that repeated travel between the two is not inconvenient.
-
I've done workshops before, why is this one different?
This workshop will teach you what to do, not do it for you, so that after the workshop you will be able to take what you learned and use it anywhere.
The workshop is for photographers that appreciate their role as a cultural anthropologist, creating photographs that document human behavior. Doers that want to learn, gain insight, that want community but at the same time can be a nomad. You need motivation, a comfortable pair of walking shoes and a not too snobby wine palette.
-
What do I need to bring?
All attendees are expected to bring a camera that they are familiar with. Your camera must be digital only due to the nature of the workshop. Film is great but it won’t allow for the daily downloads and reviews we will be doing. Your camera should also have a wide (ish) lens. I recommend focal lengths between 28 and 35 but a little shorter or longer can work as well. Also recommended (but not required) is a backup camera, extra lens and additional battery, just in case. A battery charger is of course a must as is at least one (two is better) memory cards compatible with your camera. A laptop or tablet with editing software you are comfortable with is essential so that you may download and edit your best work for the critiques and final show. I use and recomend Capture One Pro but Lightroom is also good as is a combo of Photo Mechanic and or Photoshop with Bridge. Additionally, a removable drive is esential in order to move images from your computer to mine.
